WEATHER UPDATE: 11:20AM SUNDAY 22 AUG: The rain is light, and lighting is still good, so unless things deteriorate, WE'RE GOOD TO GO (at least for the braver among you). Chance for rain went up to 80%, so be prepared to get a little wet, and let's meet at SOFRA, just down the street at 1 Belmont St., at 1:30.

It's summertime, and that means it's time for our next outdoor event. Weather permitting, we'll meet at the North Entrance to the Mount Auburn Cemetery at 1:30pm on Sunday, August 22nd (and we'll finish by 5:30, time enough for you to still make your dinner or BBQ plans). The entrance, with its prominent gate, is off of (logically enough) Mt. Auburn St. (which also become Rte. 16 right there).

At 1:45, we'll depart and start exploring the cemetery, famous for its landscape and well-known gravesites. We'll tweet updates of our location at @vanhoosear if you're late and want to connect up.

When we finish here, we can continue along the Charles and end in Harvard Square, or head up to Fresh Pond and see where the winds take us.

We anticipate a good 3 or 4 miles of walking walk, so bring comfortable shoes, your camera, and whatever advice you can give to budding photographers.

If the weather is lousy, we'll abort the walk, seek shelter at Sofra, and plan our next step from there.

About the Cemetery: Founded in 1831, Mount Auburn Cemetery was the first large-scale designed landscape open to the public in the United States. It gave birth to the rural cemetery movement, the tradition of garden cemeteries, and ultimately the National Park Service. Oh, and it's the burial place for a long list of famous residents, including:

    * Charles Bulfinch (1763 - 1844), architect
    * Mary Baker Eddy (1821 - 1910), religious leader
    * Buckminster Fuller (1895 - 1983), architect, visionary
    * Isabella Stewart Gardner (1840 - 1924), art patron
    * Oliver Wendell Holmes (1809 - 1894), author and poet
    * Winslow Homer (1836 - 1910), artist
    * Julia Ward Howe (1819 - 1910), reformer and author
    * Harriet Jacobs (1813 - 1897), author and abolitionist
    * Edwin H. Land (1909 - 1991), inventor, photography pioneer
    * Henry Cabot Lodge (1850 - 1924), U.S. Senator
    * Henry Cabot Lodge, Jr. (1902-1985), U.S. Senator
    * Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807 - 1882), poet
    * Amy Lowell (1874 - 1925), poet
    * James Russell Lowell (1819 - 1891), poet
    * Josiah Quincy (1772 - 1864), Mayor of Boston
    * Josephine St. Pierre Ruffin (1842 - 1924), civil rights leader, journalist
    * Charles Sumner (1811 - 1874), abolitionist and U.S. Senator
